The definition of RESOLUTION is ‘the act of determining.’ Lincoln was saying that your current situation doesn’t matter as much as that YOU DETERMINE that you will succeed. He was saying that no matter who says you can or cannot fail that YOU hold more power than ANY OUTSIDE INFLUENCE as to your own success. Let’s look at a few examples.
Abraham Lincoln knew from experience what he was talking about. He was born in a one-room log cabin in Kentucky to poor parents. Although being born in poverty and losing his mother at age 9, somehow that didn’t affect his resolve. Did you know that before becoming elected the 16th President of the United States of America, he lost 8 elections? How many of you would lose 8 elections and keep going? Previously in my life, I quit often…sometimes at the first sign of adversity. But Lincoln had a “resolution” to succeed.
Now, I speak from experience when I can say “ditto” to Lincoln’s quote above. You see, just a few years before being chosen for The Biggest Loser, I was over 450 pounds, almost $45,000 in credit card debt, and desperate for change. I saw no way out. You see, dozens of times over the years I tried to lose weight only to quit and gain it all back. Over and over again I would quit and lose my resolution to succeed. Then on a fateful night I walked into the living room and saw my wife watching a show on NBC called ‘The Biggest Loser.’ I looked at my wife and said, “I think I could do well on that show! I know how to lose weight, and that would give me the ‘no way out’ situation that I need!” Darci told me I should check into it and the process was started. I tried out for season 6 of The Biggest Loser and promptly got no reply. Normally I would give up and quit…but not this time. I even stood up as I sent my season 7 video in to NBC and told 61 people in Dallas, TX that I would “get on that show, and I will win it!”
Upon hearing that bold statement, some giggled, some clapped, some said “that is up to you.” Although I tried out with 4 different partners for season 7 and still did not get chosen for the show, I stood up at a band practice in front of about 30 chior members and said, “I feel like it is my destiny to get on that show, and I am sending in another tape!” I ended up on season 8 as many of you know, and I lost the most weight in history on The Biggest Loser. Losing 55.58% of my total body weight was not easy to do, and even though I got on the show, I could have failed. Those words Lincoln said resonate in my mind every day. “Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any one thing.” You see, more important than any one thing in my journey on The Biggest Loser wan my RESOLUTION to SUCCEED! I had determined before being selected on the show that I would succeed, and I never let anything turn me away from that resolution. Just like Lincoln losing 8 elections and eventually being elected as President of The Untied States of America!
You too can succeed. I tell you the words of Lincoln…If you decide to succeed, THAT is more important that any situation…any person…any event. Your determination to be successful is what will eventually cause you to reach that goal that you set. Find that determination…that resolution to succeed. Without it you are putting the power in everyone else’s hands. Keep that power in YOUR hands and decide for yourself what your future will be!
Since going to “The Biggest Loser” ranch, Danny lost 239 pounds, but more importantly, he’s learned the importance of living with a healthy mental attitude and physical lifestyle. It’s no wonder he’s NBC 's season eight’s winner of The Biggest Loser and was crowned "The Biggest Loser...EVER!!!" He lost an amazing 55.58% of his body weight during the show and can now happily say he is "less than half the man he used to be!"
